Dissidenten (Deutschland)

The True Godfathers of Ethno Beat

Since in the early 1980s Marlon Klein, Uve Müllrich, and Friedo Josch combined the world’s most diverse musical idioms with their own experiences in krautrock and jazzrock—which they gathered in legendary ensembles such as Embryo—, Dissidenten (“dissidents”) are regarded as Germany's pioneers in world music. The magazine Rolling Stone even dubbed them the “Godfathers of World Beat”.

After long stays in India and Northern Africa, they rose to become spectacular pioneers of a Eurasian-Arabian fusion. The following years brought great success in South and North America, the Mediterranean countries, and South Africa. Dissidenten not only integrated international influences into their own sound, but always seek to let musicians from the respective countries take part in their music. The list of guest performers on their records resembles a who’s who of world music.

Stylistically, their music is hard to define. Besides Oriental, Indian, and other ethnic sounds, good old jazz is also an ever-present element in the arrangements of Dissidenten. Their constant musical renewal does not exclude current trends, either. The metamorphosis from hippie to hip-hop is evident in the 1997 album “Instinctive Traveler”, whereas the remix album “2001 – A Worldbeat Odyssey” proves that the term ‘electronic’ does not trigger allergic reactions in this ensemble, and Sven Väth, who puts their hits through the techno grinder and adds extensive beats, enhances a further evolutionary step towards club sounds.

In Germany, they still remain an inside tip, although in other countries they have already reached the status of acclaimed stars. Their song “Fata Morgana”, for example, became an amazing super hit in Spanish and Italian discos, and they sold several million records. Their live performances are unique and fascinating. No matter whether in a German club or, like in Spain in 1986, in front of an audience of 250.000—the concerts of Dissidenten are an experience you should not miss.
